In this case energy is being drawn out of our system as time passes. This loss of energy shows up as decreasing amplitude over time. Amplitude is the size of the pendulum swing. Of course as the swing amplitude decreases so does the amplitude of the velocity. It is typical of dynamical systems with net energy losses that they tend to coast to a stop.
